Rule Changes Would Give FBI Agents Extensive New Powers

Carrie Johnson | September 12, 2008

The Justice Department will unveil changes to FBI ground rules today that would put much more power into the hands of line agents pursuing leads on national security, foreign intelligence and even ordinary criminal cases.

The overhaul, the most substantial revision to FBI operating instructions in years, also would ease some reporting requirements between agents, their supervisors and federal prosecutors in what authorities call a critical effort to improve information gathering and detect terrorist threats.

Ford told FBI about panel’s doubts on JFK murder

Michael J. Sniffen | August 12, 2008

Former President Ford secretly advised the FBI that two of his fellow members on the Warren Commission doubted the FBI’s conclusion that John F. Kennedy was shot from the sixth floor of the Texas Book Depository in Dallas, according to newly released records from Ford’s FBI files.

Ford, still a congressman at the time, also told a senior FBI official about internal panel disputes over hiring staff, Chief Justice Earl Warren’s timetable for completing the final report on the assassination and what panel members said about the FBI.

Why Wasn’t Ivins Declared an Enemy Combatant?

Jacob G. Hornberger | August 7, 2008

So, the FBI was prepared to indict U.S. Army scientist Bruce Ivins for terrorism before he committed suicide. The specific act of terrorism for which Ivins was to be indicted was employing weapons of mass destruction, to wit: anthrax, on American citizens on American soil.

What?

An indictment?

Nearly a dozen people have been arrested in what U.S. officials are calling the largest hacking and identity theft case ever prosecuted in the country.

Eleven people from around the world have been arrested and charged in connection with a slew of well-organized electronic break-ins that has seen more than 40 million credit and debit card numbers stolen.

Neocons Pressured FBI to Blame al-Qaeda for Anthrax Attacks

Kurt Nimmo | August 4, 2008

It was another example of sloppy work on the part of the neocons to blame Muslims and add fodder to their total war campaign. As the Daily News reported over the weekend, neocons in the Bush White House repeatedly put pressure on FBI Director Robert Mueller to “prove” the 2001 anthrax attacks was the work of Osama bin Laden and his cave dwelling terrorists, an impossible task at best due to the fact the anthrax used in the attacks was a weaponized strain produced by the U.S. military.

American Fascism in the Ascendant

Michael S. Rozeff | July 21, 2008

Most unfortunately, American-style fascism, after learning how to walk between 1898 and 1918, took its Great Leap Forward under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, thirty-second President of the U.S.A. (1933–1945). America has not looked back. The toddler has attained maturity. Not entirely fascist yet – nobody’s perfect – we are far gone. Recent financial events and rumblings are advancing America’s fascism still further. By the time we get where we are headed for, full-fledged hardening of the arteries will have set in. Like the Third Reich, we will collapse.

But we have already come far enough that our mode of government should now be termed fascism. Our government is not democracy or democratic republicanism. It is fascist. We live in a fascist country, and increasingly so.

FBI Does Not Need Reasonable Suspicion to Investigate You

KFDA Newschannel 10 | July 5, 2008

FBI Agents could soon be allowed to investigate Americans without any evidence of wrongdoing, according to the Justice Department.

Justice Department officials say FBI Agents would rely on a terrorist profile that could single out Muslims, Arabs or other racial groups. Randall County District Attorney James Farren says this announcement by the Justice Department really doesn’t change anything in relation to the personal rights of citizens.

Fusion Centers: Implementing the Control Grid

Kurt Nimmo | July 5, 2008

In order to sell us on surrendering our rights, the government told us they would establish “fusion centers” around the country to collect intelligence on al-Qaeda and assorted other amorphous bad guys, an explanation that made sense to a lot of people after September 11, 2001. For some reason, though, the government did not get around to telling us that these so-called “fusion centers” are a creature of the Department of Defense and DARPA, an outgrowth of the supposedly discredited and “defunded” Total Information Awareness program, the brainchild of convicted Iran-Contra felon John Poindexter.

FBI Agents to Converge on DNC

Kurt Nimmo | July 4, 2008

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the FBI will dispatch “hundreds” of agents during the DNC “to gather intelligence on possible terrorist activity.” It apparently does not matter there is “no word on any terrorist threats to the convention, but the FBI is taking no chances.” The FBI is not worried about al-Qaeda. Instead, it is keen on “studying tactics, which have blocked streets and disrupted traffic in the past,” tactics employed by its own agents provocateurs as an excuse to crack down on citizens exercising their right to petition the government under the First Amendment.

Looking for Mr. Gadahn

Kurt Nimmo | June 1, 2008

It’s all about keeping a-CIA-duh front and center. “The FBI has launched a publicity campaign in Afghanistan to announce a $1 million reward for information about an American from California charged with treason,” reports the Associated Press. “Adam Yahiye Gadahn, 29, grew up in Riverside County. He is ‘an integral part of al-Qaida’s media and recruitment branch (and) has endorsed terrorist activity,’ FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said Friday.”

Provocations as Pretexts for Imperial War: From Pearl Harbor to 9/11

James Petras | May 25, 2008

Wars in an imperialist democracy cannot simply be dictated by executive fiat, they require the consent of highly motivated masses who will make the human and material sacrifices. Imperialist leaders have to create a visible and highly charged emotional sense of injustice and righteousness to secure national cohesion and overcome the natural opposition to early death, destruction and disruption of civilian life and to the brutal regimentation that goes with submission to absolutist rule by the military.

The need to invent a cause is especially the case with imperialist countries because their national territory is not under threat. There is no visible occupation army oppressing the mass of the people in their everyday life. The ‘enemy’ does not disrupt everyday normal life – as forced conscription would and does. Under normal peaceful time, who would be willing to sacrifice their constitutional rights and their participation in civil society to subject themselves to martial rule that precludes the exercise of all their civil freedoms?
